As each new version
and model of an appliance or a gadget is released by the companies that make them, new features and innovations are
added, and their size and appearance likewise experience radical changes. Refrigerators are one such electronic
appliance that has benefitted from technological advancements ever since it first became a fixture in every
kitchen, as it has experienced many changes in both its features as well as its appearance. But despite the many
different features that are offered by the sleek-looking modern refrigerators, there are still those who prefer
refrigerators that could be said as relics of the past, and yet still are a sight to behold because of their
uncanny appearance, especially compared to the refrigerators of today. These refrigerators are none other than
retro refrigerators, and despite the fact that they may be a tad behind other refrigerators in terms of
sophistication, they still have an edge over other refrigerators, which is their unique and uncommon
appearance.
The thing is,
technology is something that is almost always characterized by advancement, and with its progression comes a
drastic change in the lives of people. An important advancement in technology is always reflected in many aspects
of people’s lives, and these advancements will always bring about an improvement, whether in the form of an
entirely new invention or an upgrade of something that had been previously in existence. Such is the case of many
electronic appliances and gadgets that have benefitted from technological advancements and improvements, a trend
which continues even in this day and age.
Some of the
earliest forms of the refrigerator that have been developed even before the discovery of electricity are wooden
iceboxes, which have been used for many years until the electronic refrigerator came along. This only means that
the use of refrigeration to keep food and beverages chilled has been around for a long time already, although these
crude versions of the refrigerator cannot be considered as retro refrigerators.
But since the
discovery of electricity and the release of the first electronic refrigerator in the 1910s, this particular
electronic appliance has undergone many changes and has become more helpful in the preservation of food and
beverages. But in the strictest sense, those refrigerators that are now considered as retro did not come out until
the 1950s, and contrary to popular belief, these types of refrigerators share many similarities with the
refrigerators that are commercially-available today. The most common appearance of retro refrigerators
feature an otter metal frame that is marked while having a genuine chrome trim. The capacity of a typical retro
refrigerator is around 20.9 cubic feet, which fares well when stacked up against the capacity of modern
refrigerators, which normally have 14.5 cubic feet of space with an additional 6.4 cubic feet of space for their
freezer.
However, despite
the many similarities between retro refrigerators and modern refrigerators when it comes to their dimensions, the
case is very different once their appearances are discussed, as it had already been mentioned that a distinguishing
characteristic of refrigerators during the 1950s had been different from the sleek and smooth appearance that
typifies today’s refrigerators.
Refrigerators
during those times have been built to stand out in the kitchen, and have not been manufactured to merely blend in
and complement the kitchen cabinets and countertops. This is why finding retro
refrigerators with colors such as avocado green, sky blue, and even a deep crimson red was not uncommon, unlike
the refrigerators of today which mostly bear the shade of neutral colors such as white, gray, and black, which are
more subdued in comparison to the colors which were used for the refrigerators of yesterday.
And
it is the bold and unique colors of retro refrigerators that entice people to use them in their kitchen even during
the proliferation of modern and sophisticated refrigerators. This is because these colors add style and even fun to
the look of their kitchen, as its unusual color easily grabs the attention of anyone who steps into the homeowner’s
kitchen, therefore easily making them as the centrepiece of their kitchen.
Perhaps another
reason as to why some people prefer to add retro refrigerators in their kitchen as opposed to modern refrigerators
can be attributed to nostalgia, as some people would love nothing more than to have a constant reminder of simpler
times that have come and gone in their kitchens, a blast from the past, according to a popular saying.
Unfortunately,
there are some glaring features of modern refrigerators that simply cannot be found in retro refrigerators,
and there are several of them, foremost of which is the fact that despite faring well in comparison to the size of
modern refrigerators, the refrigerators of the 1950s still does not have as much room as the refrigerators of
today.
Another
obvious edge that modern refrigerators have over their ancestors from decades past is the fact that they have
freezers that have been added to ensure that beverages and similar products will be kept chilled and fresh, which
is something that is sorely lacking in a retro refrigerator. And finally additional features such as water
dispensers and water purifying system that have been included in modern refrigerators may be a trifle for some, but
it is nevertheless something that is needed in every household and also something that cannot be found in retro
refrigerators, which therefore causes many prospective customers to instead purchase modern refrigerators that have
all of the aforementioned features.
But despite all of
these shortcomings, there are still many people that would like to have a retro refrigerator adorning their kitchen
and standing out against their countertops and cabinets, and with good reason for they indeed add a sense of style
and even a dash of fun in their kitchen, which is something that the sophisticated modern refrigerator cannot
provide with their subdued colors. Technology truly has paved the way for many changes in people’s lives, and this
is very much reflected in the various changes that have been made in electronic appliances and gadgets. However,
people sometimes still prefer to have relics of the past rather than the products of the present, as evidenced by
the people who still prefer to have retro refrigerators inside their kitchens because of their unique appearance,
their aesthetic appeal, and also because of a sense of nostalgia.
